Governments invest in new
Maritime Motor Sports Hall of Fame
Oct. 11, 2007 -
PETITCODIAC (CNB) - Federal and provincial officials joined
representatives of the Village of Petitcodiac today to announce an
investment of more than $1.1 million to establish the Maritime Motor
Sports Hall of Fame, a year-round centre to showcase the history of
motor sports in the region. Premier Shawn Graham, Fundy Royal MP Rob
Moore, and Petitcodiac Mayor Peter Saunders were on hand for today's
event.
"The Province of New Brunswick is proud to be a partner in this
important project for the community of Petitcodiac and the surrounding
area," Graham said. "Investing in community
projects such as this one will help generate economic activity in the
region and work toward our goal of self-sufficiency."
"The Government of Canada is getting things done for the people of
Petitcodiac," Moore said. "Our strategic investment of more than
$550,000 in the development of the Maritime Motor Sports Hall of Fame is
another step on our path to building stronger communities and a stronger
Canada." He spoke on behalf of National Defence Minister Peter MacKay,
Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA).
"I am very pleased to receive financial contributions from ACOA and the
Regional Development
Corporation," Saunders said. "The funding will enable construction of
the Maritime Motor Sports Hall of Fame located on Hooper Lane in
Petitcodiac. This facility will provide a much-needed economic boost to
the Village of Petitcodiac."
The Maritime Motor Sports Hall of Fame is expected to increase sales and
employment for local businesses as it draws more visitors to the village
and the surrounding area. It is estimated this project will draw a
minimum of 10,500 visitors in its first full year of operation,
increasing to over 11,500 by the third year. It is also expected to draw
motor sports enthusiasts from other parts of Canada and the United
States, having a significant impact on the economy of the Village of
Petitcodiac.
The Government of Canada is investing $551,500 in the project through
ACOA's Innovative Communities Fund. The Province of New Brunswick is
providing $250,000, and the Village of Petitcodiac is contributing
$185,000 (in kind). An additional $50,000 (in kind) comes from the
Maritime Motor Sports Hall of Fame Inc. and $131,606 from fundraising
initiatives.
